About the event

The making of hinges is an essential skill that allows the artisan to create objects that move and conform to the body as well as provide a flexible connection between two or more parts. This workshop will explore the making of tube hinges and other forms of interconnecting members that allow your designs to move freely. Day 1: Each student will make connected samples of at least 8 different hinges that they can use in their work. The explanations will be clear and will demystify the precision required to make smooth working articulations. With these skills the student will be able to make bracelets, necklaces, belts and long free flowing pendants. The possibilities are boundless. Day 2: Students will make a hanging locket or multi-hinged pendant or brooch. 9am-5pm each day.

This workshop is limited to 8 students.

BIO: Self-taught metalsmith practicing since the early 1970’s. Fred has been involved with teaching others for over 45 years and has a sincere passion for the process of metalworking and all of it’s traditions and possibilities. His desire to give homage to those who proceeded him and his desire for information have led him to moderate several historical metal forums including the Society of American Silversmiths and Society of Arts & Crafts website. A creative innovator of materials and tools to create unique designs, Fred has attended and assisted in many workshops in metal and other media. He is currently involved in forging neck collars for retailers and producing a line of unique pins and pendants using techniques he has developed. Teaching is a natural extension of his desire to share with others what he knows and fall into his desire to “Show & Tell”. http://fredz49.blogspot.com
