About the event

In this TWO-DAY workshop, you will learn how to carve a cavity directly into a cuttlebone to create a mold. Cuttlebone is a hard brittle internal structure found in a cuttlefish. When a cuttlefish dies, only the cuttlebone remains. Because cuttlebone can withstand high temperatures and is easy to carve, it serves as a great mold making material for small metal castings used in jewelry creation. The interior of the cuttlebone has a unique texture that becomes part of the mold.

Using a torch, you will melt scrap sterling silver into a crucible and pour it into your mold. The casting you create will be released from the burnt cuttlebone and is the basis for a piece of jewelry. The cuttlebone mold can only be used once. Using jewelry making techniques such as grinding, drilling, filing, soldering, linking jump rings, polishing, etc., your casting will become a finished and unique piece of jewelry.

You should be able to make a few castings and at least one finished piece of jewelry in

this workshop.
